To further support the Golden Lion Tamarin Association and the Australasian Species Management Program, Tasmania Zoo Wildlife Foundation is developing a Golden Lion Tamarin breeding facility.
The Golden Lion Tamarin is a small South American Monkey that has been listed as Critically Endangered in the wild since the 1970s. Facing threats mainly as a result of the pet trade and deforestation, the wild population is thought to have reached as low as 200 individuals confined to fragmented areas of Atlantic forest. More recently, a Yellow Fever epidemic wreaked havoc on populations from 2016-2018, seeing a 32% drop in Golden Lion Tamarin numbers. Through a combination of vaccination programs and reintroductions of captive-born animals, the population is now at around 2,500 individuals.
Tasmania Zoo Wildlife Foundation aims to develop a Golden Lion Tamarin Breeding facility. This breeding complex will comprise of a number of enclosures, capable of housing multiple breeding pairs of these charismatic primates and their offspring. The aim of this project is to bolster the tamarin numbers in the captive program and to contribute to further reintroductions in to the wild if required. An important part of this project will see the importation of multiple Golden Lion Tamarins from Europe to enhance the genetic value of the offspring produced as part of the project.
With support of the Tasmania Zoo Wildlife Foundation, the Golden Lion Tamarin Breeding facility up and running and new animals imported from Europe by the end of 2025.
